Del Shores’ play “Sordid Lives” was written in 1996 and was nominated for over 30 awards during its long run in Los Angeles.
Set in 1998, this black comedy about white trash was inspired by Shores' own personal experience. The story is all about a Texas family coming together in the aftermath of the matriarch's death after she tripped over her lover’s wooden legs in a motel room. The woman's family must deal with their own demons while preparing for what could be an embarrassing funeral. Chaos erupts in Winters, Texas.
In 2000 “Sordid Lives” was made into a comedy film written and directed by Del Shores, in his directorial debut. It was followed by the 2008 television series of the same name. Many of the original cast went on to do both the film and series, including Beth Grant as Sissy Hickey, Leslie Jordan as Earl 'Brother Boy' Ingram, Olivia Newton-John as Bitsy Mae Harling, Rue McClanahan as Peggy Ingram with Caroline Rhea, and Delta Burke portraying Noleta Nethercott.
Evil Cheez Productions was founded in 2013 by Wayne and Tanja Miller after aspiring novelist Wayne decided to merge his loves for writing and performance. ECP allowed him to focus on penning and producing his own original works. In the years since, ECP has embraced other playwrights and produced other independent and novel works. The one constant with all ECP productions is an insistence on excellence and that all ECP shows come with a certain “edginess.”
The Whole Backstages’ Blackbox Theatre was created for a myriad of reasons with one being the primary focus of providing a smaller venue for more creative and mature themed performances.
This will be the third Evil Cheez production performed in the Blackbox with "What NOT to do When Your House is Haunted" in 2021 and "The Gathering of 9” in 2022.
